Dave tries his hand at kite skiing
On Christmas, Dave and I went out with our friend Evan to play with his kite. He was all set up to use it to pull him along on cross country skis, but Dave and I just tested it out on foot. The weather was cold, grey, and windy, but we had fun nonetheless! The set up is pretty basic- he just uses a climbing harness to attach the kite to his body, with a single "steering" bar at hand level. Pulling left on the bar steers you left, and right steers you right. The kite is relatively large, and was pretty slow to respond, but once you got the hang of it you could get it to move in steady figure-eights. This little red kite definitely had some pull when you caught the right wind!

At one point we were joined by another kite skier, with a purple kite. His kite was smaller, more agile, and he was very skilled at zipping around the flat snow.
Dave recorded a great little video of Chelsea expertly manuvering the kite... we'll try to get that uploaded sometime soon...
We also ran across some beautiful ice crystal formations in our ski back to Scott Base.
